Dear Property Owners and Residents of the City of Idaho Springs:

Now that colder weather and snow is upon us, the City wanted to send out a reminder about Sidewalk Maintenance and Upkeep. As Residents and Property Owners in the City, it is our responsibility to make sure that the Sidewalks in front of and adjacent to our property are kept free of snow and ice, as well as kept in a maintained condition.

The City Municipal Code states, “No owner, manager, agent, or occupant of real property within the City shall allow snow or ice to accumulate on public sidewalks abutting their property, and they shall have joint and several responsibilities for the removal of any such snow and ice, such removal to be accomplished within twenty-four (24) hours of the accumulation of any snowfall” (Ord. 8 §1, 2006).

Further, section 13-21 of the City Code, Responsibility for Construction, Repair, etc., of sidewalks, curbs, and gutters states “The construction, maintenance and repair of sidewalks in front of or alongside any lot or parcel of property shall be the obligation of the owners of said property.(Ord. 8 §1, 2006).

This winter, please make sure that your sidewalks are kept free of snow and ice. Please also make sure that your sidewalks are maintained in safe and passable condition, with no overhanging tree limbs or bushes, or any other obstacle that impedes travel.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
